Two Freedom of the City of London Ceremonies: 17 June 2024

Two Freedom of the City of London ceremonies, arranged with the Chamberlain’s office at Guildhall, were held back-to-back on Monday 17 June 2024.  The Master, Upper Warden, Court Assistant Deirdre Barr, Clerk, Assistant Clerk and guests were in attendance. A celebratory lunch was held in the Aldermen’s Dining Room at Guildhall afterwards.

Being admitted to the Freedom of the City is a unique part of London’s history. Many people who have either lived or worked in the City are proud recipients of this honour. Freemen of the Worshipful Company of Nurses who wish to take the next step towards becoming Liverymen must first become Free of the City. Sixteen Freemen were admitted in this ancient ceremony conducted by Tiphaine Le Bian, Deputy Clerk to the Chamberlain’s Court.

Tiphaine welcomed all the new Freemen of the City individually as a Citizen and Nurse with the traditional greeting of “I bring you joy”. Each Freeman was presented with their certificate and a book entitled “Rules for the Conduct of Life”. This book was first published in 1740 and outlines the conduct expected of Apprentices and Freemen in the City of London. (For example, a Freeman can drive their sheep over London Bridge)!

Congratulations to all those Freemen who attended, and we look forward to receiving your application for Livery in due course.

Members of the Company will be able to view photographs of the event in the ’Gallery’ section of the website once you have logged in.

If you are not yet Free of the City, and would like further information about the application process, please contact Peter Rogers, Clerk. email: clerk@companyofnurses.co.uk
