Mental Health in Education-Inspiring Solutions

In April Past Master Fran Davies and Freeman Professor Emma Wadey attended the Educators Trust Awards Dinner. The Worshipful Company of Nurses were invited to contribute to this year’s event due to the topic of mental health and were delighted to meet the award winners and hear the work that they are doing in schools, colleges and universities to promote health and well being amongst their pupils and students.

The summer event on Friday June 7th was the opportunity to hear from three of the award winners followed by a panel discussion with expert contributors. Professor Emma Wadey represented the Company on this panel. She is currently the National Deputy Director for Mental Health Nursing at NHSE England. She is clinically active and has over 25 years of extensive strategic experience across a wide range of mental health settings.

Emma spoke with confidence in response to the three award winners who all presented different experiences but with a common theme of the increase in young people’s mental health episodes. She spoke eloquently about normalising common anxieties and stresses which are an integral part of growing up which help shape them into the adult they will become.

The evening was well supported, and a good debate arose from the presentations and responses from the three panel members. Nurses and educators share common ground with acknowledgement that supporting the health and well-being of the people who deliver the education and health care is as important as supporting the mental health of the receivers of their care. Much food for thought and we were delighted to be able to support the Educators Trust in this event.

The event programme is here.
