Military Affiliation Weekend, Aldershot 27-30 Oct 23

During the weekend of 27-30 October Deirdre Barr, Military Liaison Officer for the Worshipful Company of Nurses, and I were guests of the Commanding Officer, Lt Col Kevin Forbes, and Major Domini Barrett, Senior Nursing Officer of 306 Hospital Support Regiment. We were based at St Omer Barracks in Aldershot, where we were invited to join the QARANC training weekend for 306 Unit.

306 is the Army Reserve Unit which has a pool of specialist nursing staff, similar to the civilian nursing bank. It is one of three units that form part of the Central Reserve Head Quarters Army Medical Services.

The weekend was entitled ‘Looking forward – Opportunities for Nurses’. I delivered a presentation about The Worshipful Company of Nurses. Although I was given half an hour, because everyone was so interested in the subject, Deirdre and I answered questions for a further fifteen minutes.

The rest of the weekend was spent in classroom work where we learned about the importance of looking after mental health while on deployment and some of the ethical issues facing nurses in the field of battle. Finally, a great deal of time was spent on the care of burns while on deployment.

As well as the conference there was time for socialising, and we enjoyed a little silliness together as well.

All in all, it was a most successful weekend. We will look forward to welcoming Major Domini Barrett to our Company dinner on 22 November as the first recipient of our Military Trophy.
