Military Affiliation Visit – Sat 28 Nov 2025

The Worshipful Company of Nurses is affiliated with Central Reserve Headquarters which is comprised of three units with Army Reserve nurses being an intrinsic part of all three units.

Affiliation demonstrates the Company’s support for the Armed Forces and at least once a year the Company are invited to spend time with each of the units to actively demonstrate this support.

The Master, Military Liaison Officer, Deirdre Barr, and Court Assistant, David Bates were invited to take part in 335 Medical Evacuation Regiment’s clinical training weekend at the University of Cumbria. They enjoyed an informative day of training with around 40 of 335’s nurses, medics and Combat Medical Technicians.

Sessions included: pharmacology; primary care; clinical procedures including airway management and use of pelvic binders and traction splints; ultrasound for cannulation and chest assessment and primary surveys following injury, complete with scenarios and simulation training with mannequins. In all sessions the Company of Nurses representatives were made to feel most welcome and were able to contribute. For Deirdre and David, who have both been military nurses, many of the military aspects of the training were familiar, less so for the Master. The unit had also allowed time in the programme for a short presentation and Q & A session about the Company to those present. Awards were presented by the Commanding Officer Lt Col Andrew Curphey including a special award for “Best Soldier” awarded in the name of the sadly missed, late Senior Nursing Officer Kerry McFadden Newman.

The day finished with a convivial curry, complete with obligatory wearing of Christmas jumpers!
