Liverymens’ Lunch at the Houses of Parliament
On Monday 13 July 2026, the Master and 48 Liverymen had lunch in the Terrace Dining Room at the Houses of Parliament. Before lunch we met on the terrace for a refreshing drink and to take in the views of the Thames, and of course St Thomas’ Hospital directly opposite. Many of us took this privileged opportunity to capture personal and group photos to record our visit.
We enjoyed a delicious three course meal and an interesting talk from the Rt. Hon. Anne Milton, who is one of the Founding Members of the Worshipful Company of Nurses. Anne had a remarkable career, a nurse by background, she later became the MP for Guildford. Anne told us about her time in Government as the Minister for Health, Women, Apprenticeships and Skills, and the first female Government Deputy Chief Whip. Her delightful recollections were both amusing – and enlightening.
The animated companionship with our colleagues, the meal and Anne’s talk were enjoyed by one and all, in this most historic and majestic building, which is fundamental to our British way of life and governance. Altogether a most joyful and interesting experience.
A few members took this opportunity to take advantage of visiting the public galleries of both Houses of Parliament.
We witnessed Shabana Mahmoud addressing the House of Commons, speaking eloquently about the awful recent murder of Ann Widdecombe.
Many Members of Parliament stood to recall their fond encounters with Ann, one of their own, and to point to the dangers posed to parliamentary members in general.
We were impressed by the House of Lords, to see the leader on the famous 'woolsack’, and amazed at this most majestic and beautiful chamber.
All Houses of Parliament staff were quietly efficient, courteous and welcoming to the great number of visitors. The usher was delighted to share with us his evident pride in the story of his mother who had loved working as a nurse. Our profession manages to open doors - and hearts.
