On Saturday 27 June the Worshipful Company of Glovers held the annual Inter-Livery Croquet Day at the beautiful Sussex County Croquet Club in Southwick, Sussex. Despite red warnings only two days beforehand the weather was kind; there was plenty of sunshine, temperatures stayed in the 20s, and a cooling sea breeze kept conditions comfortable.

A record 23 Livery Companies took part, represented by 36 teams. Competitors ranged from experienced croquet players to those picking up a mallet for the first time.

Defending the title in the Inter-Livery Cup, were Liveryman Celia Brown and the very first Master’s Consort and Friend of the Worshipful Company, Professor Paul Griffiths. Our team did well in the preliminary rounds, winning 3 of their 5 games, but unfortunately were unable to repeat the success of last year, a win against a team of Plaisterers in the final game wasn’t enough to secure the title.

It is a wonderful day, superbly organised by the Glovers and Sussex County Croquet Club, the lunch under the pollarded limes was excellent and it was a wonderful opportunity to meet Liverymen from many other Companies. Delighted the Nurses were represented in this Livery tradition and hopefully next year our Company can field two teams!
