Freedom of the City of London Ceremonies – 29 Apr 2024

Nursing has now been recognised as a noble profession, worthy of inclusion in the City of London Livery movement. This brings with it added responsibilities in terms of the Company’s contribution to the City of London. It also means that Freemen of the Worshipful Company of Nurses are eligible to apply for Freedom of the City of London as a Citizen and Nurse. Obtaining the Freedom of the City is a unique part of London’s history and many people who have lived or worked in the City have been proud to have achieved this honour.

Today, most of the rights and privileges once accorded to Freemen of the City of London have been withdrawn. However, you can still drive a flock of sheep over London Bridge!  Freemen of the Company who wish to become Liverymen must first become Free of the City of London and apply to the Clerk of the Chamberlain's Court at Guildhall.

In order to encourage Freemen of the Company to take this next step, two ceremonies were arranged with the Chamberlain’s office held back-to-back on Monday 29 April 2024, with the Master, Upper Warden, Middle Warden, Clerk and guests in attendance.

In total, 20 Freemen received their Freedom of the City in this ancient ceremony conducted by Laura Miller, Clerk to the Chamberlain’s Court. Laura makes everybody feel so welcome and personalises each ceremony that she conducts with anecdotes about previous recipients. Laura spoke about Florence Nightingale and other nurses, medics and scientists who have received the Freedom of the City.

A celebratory lunch was held in Ironmongers’ Hall after the ceremonies and a convivial time was enjoyed by all. Congratulations to all those Freemen who attended on the 29th. We look forward to receiving your application for Livery in due course.

Members of the Company will be able to view the photographs of the event in the ’Gallery’ in the log in section of the website.

If you are not yet Free of the City, and would like further information about the application process, please contact Peter Rogers, Clerk. email: cl***@co*************.uk
