Education Event: Monday – 2 Jun 2025

Title: ‘Major Trauma and Specialist Nurse Trauma Service: Impact on patient care’.
Presenters: Carole Olding and Mike O’Toole

The Summer Term Education and Professional Development Session was delivered as a hybrid event.

Carole and Mike shared their research activity with us alongside their passion and commitment to meeting the capability requirement of the Major Trauma Centre. The concept and philosophy were clearly articulated and resonated with previous presentations that we have enjoyed from our nursing colleagues in Helicopter Emergency medical services (HEMS) and the RAF, where the focus was on prehospital emergency car. Carole and Mike demonstrated the seamless collaboration that is required to make the system work effectively. This was clearly represented through their clinical outcomes and by illustrating the impact on the lives of the patients, their families and communities and emphasising throughout their presentation that this integrated management is a vital component of public health.

Their work also reinforces the importance of multi-professional teams employing technology intelligently with a strong focus on the context; the context drives the development of competent, proficient and masterly practitioners operating in the right place along the care pathway. A model familiar in the Livery community!
Carole and Mike prompted a lively professional discourse in the question-and-answer session.

A recording is available in the Members Area who missed the session and for those who wish to view the presentation again. A certificate for two hours of CPD is available on request, on return of an evaluation questionnaire, from: education@companyofnurses.co.uk

The next hybrid session will be held at the Information Technologists’ Hall and via Zoom in the usual format on Wednesday 22 Oct 2025. Continuing the trauma theme the provisional speaker is orthopaedic specialist Sarah Phillips, who will talk about her recent experiences deployed on humanitarian missions in the Middle East.

The presentation will be preceded by a reception including refreshments and nibbles between 17.30 and 18.00 pm. The programme begins live and on-line at 18.00 and completes at 20.00 pm. Any changes to timing will be announced on the website and via email. The Zoom link is sent by email prior to the session.

The education events are an important adjunct to the Company’s busy social calendar and provide another opportunity to catch up with friends and colleagues or to meet new members of the Company. We occasionally invite guests from other Livery Companies and Guilds so there is also the chance to learn about their Liveries' activities and interests too.

We are extremely fortunate to have access to prestigious professional colleagues willing to share their experiences and provide an opportunity to update our knowledge.

These presentations are always spell-binding and involve us in the fascinating things happening within the world of nursing.

We hope to encourage our members to support these special evenings, either in person at IT Hall or on a Zoom link. Believe me, you will not be sorry......
