Edith Cavell Remembered – 12 Oct 2025
The Master, Hilary Andrews laid a wreath on behalf of the Worshipful Company of Nurses, and Chair of Trustees, Brenda Griffiths laid another on behalf of the Company of Nurses Charitable Trust to commemorate the life of Edith Cavell and her contribution to nursing.
Edith Cavell is celebrated for treating wounded soldiers from both sides of the First World War without discrimination, and for covertly helping some 200 Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium. She was arrested in August 1915, court-martialled, found guilty of treason, and shot by a German firing squad on 12 October 1915. After a state funeral at Westminster Abbey, she was buried at Norwich Cathedral.
“I can't stop while there are lives to be saved” “Patriotism is not enough. I must have no hatred or bitterness towards anyone” E. Cavell.
The Company of Nurses Charitable Trust fund has worked closely with the Cavell Trust over the past 4 years, to support to nurses in need from all over the country. The partnership will continue to provide the benevolence and help which is so important, particularly in these challenging times for all nurses, everywhere.
