Company of Nurses’ scholar wins prestigious Burdett Award
We are delighted to report that our QNI Scholar, Lisa Gavin and her team have won the prestigious Burdett Overall Winner Award at the recent Burdett Awards Ceremony. The Burdett Nursing Awards reward nursing teams for their sustained commitment to providing high-quality care. Lisa leads the Inclusion Health Team, Gypsy Roma Traveller (GRT) & Inclusion Health (Children and Family Health Surrey). The Charitable Trust is very pleased to support Lisa as she furthers her professional development on the QNI Aspiring Leaders course.
Lisa’s team provides a responsive and innovative outreach service to a number of population groups who experience significant health inequalities. These include asylum seekers and refugees, Gypsies and travellers and families experiencing homelessness in a number of contexts. An Equity Midwife will be working to improve the pathways and look at the gaps in service provision. The team have also recently launched a GRT women's virtual health group which has been a huge success. It is led by GRT women who co-design the content and subject matter, depending on what the GRT women say that they want to talk about.
Lisa said “As for the QNI course, I want to thank the Company of Nurses from the bottom of my heart. I am loving it and, by coincidence, I met with my mentor and she fed back to me that she had seen a huge shift in my confidence and the QNI concept of "holding your power" which I think means having a sense of one's worth, without ego, just being confident in the change-making that we do. This is certainly not something that (I think) nurses find easy but seems to be the magic element between the shift to strategic work, while keeping the connection with our patients at the core of what we do”
