City Walk Saturday – 21 Oct 2023
On a mainly dry autumnal Saturday in October, nineteen Liverymen and Freemen met for a Guided Walk around Spitalfields, led by our London Blue Badge Guide Mo.
The walk commenced near the now famous Spitalfields market, which was established in the 13th century, and today is a vibrant, bustling area. We had an opportunity to walk through the market, where independent stallholders sell fashion, original artwork and artisan foods.
As we walked around the Spitalfields area we were able to see the architecture and culture that reflects the waves of migrant groups that have settled there since the 1600’s, including those from the Huguenot, Irish, and Jewish communities. Since the 1970’s a thriving Bangladeshi Community has flourished in the Brick Lane area which has since been renowned for its curry houses.
The walk lasted about 2 hours and was very interesting and informative, and it was also a good opportunity to meet up with fellow Liverymen and Freemen and chat as we gained this knowledge.
Thank you to Mo for her in-depth knowledge and expert guidance.
