City Walk – Sat 16 Mar 2024

City Walk Mar 24

A beautiful sunny Saturday for a guided walk around some of the secret gardens of the City. The Liverymen & Freemen from the Worshipful Company of Nurses met our Blue Badge Guide, Mo at St Pauls’ Cathedral, where the church yard was the first secret garden.

We then set off to St Vedast, Foster Lane, where there is a blue door to the side of the Church and within, is a peaceful walled garden. Next was Christ Church, Greyfriars where the garden is within the walls of the bombed-out church.  There were some large stones along the path, conveniently the size of benches, recently moved here from the Embankment as part of the super sewer works.  Great recycling.

We of course went to Barts the Less and then to Barts the Great, founded in 1123.  Many of the group know both churches and spaces well.

Mo guided us expertly through the Barbican and like many areas of the City, it is always fascinating to see the ancient and modern together.  We unfortunately couldn't get into the Barbican Conservatory, so we’ll save that for another day.

The walk was just over two hours and as with all of Mo’s walks, you are left wanting to know more. Mo guided us on a fascinating tour and she delivered in depth knowledge of the area whilst always adding in connections to nurses where she can.
