Celebrating 10 Years Together: from Guild to Worshipful Company

On Thursday 26 February 2026, members of the Worshipful Company of Nurses came together at the beautiful Bakers’ Hall to celebrate a very special occasion. It was the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Guild, first established in February 2016.

It was a joyful and memorable gathering, bringing together The Master, Past Masters, Founders, and many Liverymen and Freemen of the Company along with the previous Honorary Clerks, Keith Lawrey and John Allen, who were both instrumental in the establishment of the Guild and Livery Company. Everyone enjoyed a delicious three course lunch, served in the historic surroundings of Bakers’ Hall. The venue perfectly reflected both tradition and fellowship. Conversation flowed easily as members shared memories, caught up with one another, and looked ahead to the future.

Following lunch, The Master addressed those gathered, marking the significance of the anniversary and acknowledging the commitment, vision and determination that led to the Guild’s creation. The speech also touched on the rich history of Bakers’ Hall, reminding everyone how fortunate the Company is to be part of the wider story of the City of London’s livery movement. A copy of her speech is here.

The main speaker was Brenda Griffiths, one of the Founders and the Guild’s first Master. Her speech was both heartfelt and inspiring. Brenda reflected on the early days of the Guild, speaking openly about the many challenges involved in setting it up. With warmth and humour, she described how each hurdle was faced and overcome, one by one. Her words were a powerful reminder of the resilience and shared purpose that lie at the heart of the Worshipful Company of Nurses. A copy of her speech is here.

After the formal speeches and loyal toasts, the celebration took a delightful and unexpected turn. To the great surprise of The Master and everyone present, a special anniversary cake was brought out to mark the occasion. Everyone enjoyed a slice of cake with a ‘10’ iced on the top. Sharing in a simple but meaningful moment perfectly captured the spirit of the day. Thanks must go to Mark Groveof Cook and Butler, the catering Company who provided lunch. Mark’s mother was a nurse, and he has always taken a keen interest in the Company of Nurses.

The anniversary lunch was more than a celebration of the past — it was a celebration of the people who have shaped the Company and continue to support it. It honoured the founders’ original vision, recognised a decade of achievement, and reaffirmed a shared commitment to the future of nursing within the City of London.
