Carol Service – 13th Dec 2024

By kind invitation of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers, the nurses were asked to join them and the Worshipful Company of Arts Scholars to take part in the annual carol service on 14 December.

Traditionally this is held in the ancient church St James Garlickhythe which is nicknamed ‘Wren’s lantern’ because of the number of windows.  Members were welcomed by the peeling of the Royal Jubilee Bells cast for the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.  Once inside, eyes were drawn to the illuminated Christmas tree which dominated one corner.  All those attending were invited to place Christmas gifts under the tree to be given to disadvantaged children.

The Master, Liz Bardolph holding the replica Scutari lamp led the procession, followed by Master Art Scholar, Master Clockmaker, the Company Wardens, Clerks and clergy.  The Scutari lamp was placed on the altar.   The service was traditional, with familiar readings and carols and the church was full.  Each of the Masters read a lesson.  The choir led the congregation and sang several set pieces.   The Company of Nurses  prayer was  included in the service.

Afterwards refreshments were served at the back of the church.  This was a lovely opportunity to speak to others in the congregation, including those present from  the other Companies.

It was a wonderful start to the Christmas season.
