Belgium Trip Day 3

The Company visited the Belgian Senate. This was the building in which the trial of Edith Cavell took place.

The Company visited the room in which the trial took place, reflecting on the courage of Edith Cavell, a humanitarian nurse who nursed and aided wounded soldiers from both sides of the conflict.

There is a plaque commemorating those who were tried and executed in the Senate during the Great War 1914-1919.

Gridlocked traffic in the centre of Brussels in the afternoon meant the planned coach trip to Ghent could not go ahead. But that didn’t stop a number of the Company getting on the train to Ghent. Once in Ghent they found the Cafe where Edith Cavell met members of the resistance to plan the safe passage of injured soldiers out of Belgium and into The Netherlands. Although no longer a cafe, the building has a plaque marking the site.
